The global events affect the military presence in South Carolina during the 1990’s since back then the Chaleston Naval Base remained the largest employer of civilians in South Carolina into the 1990’s and in the early 1990’s the resolution of the Cold War and impending defense budget cuts and Charleston’s Navy Base was once again on the chopping block. Moreover, there were millions of dollars poured into the Charleston area economy and there were hundreds of thousands of jobs provided to military and civilian personnel and the huge majority being civilians within the years, and then many military personnel also worked at or passed through the base returned to Charleston to retire.
