A gardener is drawing plans for a new yard. She creates the picture below to represent the size and shape of a new lawn. How can the gardener find the total area of the new lawn? Describe the process she can use. What is the total area of the new lawn.

break the shape up in to 2 different rectangles as shown in the attached picture then calculate the area for each one and add them together:

Area of rectangle = l · w

There are 2 rectangles.

1st rectangle: 4 · 5 = 40
2nd rectangle: 6 · 4 = 24

Add both areas to find the total:

40 + 24 = 64

The area is 64 ft²
