The Smoot-Hawley Tariff or Hawley-Smoot Tariff was signed into law in 1930. This act raised tariffs in the United States on over 20,000 imported goods. This increased the prices that American consumers were paying for the goods that were being imported. The government passed this law to help protected American businesses and farmers compete against foreign prices and products.
