(i) What values of x and y will make 3x - 2y equal zero?

(ii) Work out the greatest possible value of 3x - 2y.

(iii) Work out the least possible value of 3x – 2y.

Answer:

a) i) The equation is satisfies of the values x = 6 and y=9

ii) The greatest possible value of 3x-2y is 20

iii) The least possible value of 3x – 2y is 2 and '0'

b)

The value of 5(a – 4b) = -55

Explanation:

Given x and y are two numbers taken from the list below

5 6 7 8 9 10

i)

I will choose x = 6 and y = 9

3x - 2y = 3 (6) - 2(9) = 18 - 18 = 0

The equation is satisfies of the values x = 6 and y=9

ii)

we will choose x =10 and y = 5

3x - 2y = 3(10) - 2(5) = 30 -10 =20

The greatest possible value = 20

iii)

we will choose x =6 and y =8

3x - 2y = 3(6) -2(8) = 18-16 =2

we will choose x =6 and y =9

3x - 2y = 3 (6) - 2(9) = 18 - 18 = 0

b)

Given value of 5(a – 4b)

substitute a = -7 and b = 1

5(a – 4b) = 5(-7-4(1)) = 5 (-11) = -55
