(i)

The words 'former' and 'latter' refer to two different things.

Here, we're taking supporters and critics.

  • 'former' refers to the first group/thing
  • 'latter' refers to the second/last group/thing

So in this case, 'former' is referred to the supporters, and 'latter' is referred to the critics.

(ii) The man gave us a choice between music and sports, I chose the former, while she chose the latter.
