The number of sundae sold be "x" and banana split be "y".

Thus, the total amount spent is,

2x+3y

The total amount spent is given to be $156. Thus,

156 =
2x+3y

It is also given that, the shop sold 8 more sundaes than banana splits. In equation form,


x = y+8


y = x-8,

Inserting this value of y in above equation, we get,

156 =
2x+3(x-8) =
5x-24


180 = 5x

Thus, x = 36 = number of sundae sold.
