Talia was a scientist whose research compared the birth rates of young women of a New England community over the course of five years. She was just asked to present her research. The problem is that she didn't know how to present this information on a slide. She comes to you and asks for advice. What do you recommend that she do?

Answer:

Talia should do the following:

  • Put her name and the name of the topic on the first slide - so that people know who is presenting the information, and what the information is about.
  • Avoid taking longer than 10 minutes - people have low attention spans nowadays, and they find it difficult to focus for more than 10 minutes even if the presentation is interesting.
  • Add 10 slides or less, exclusively with graphical information - Talia is a demographer, and she probably had to elaborate several charts and graphs for her research. She should put those graphs on the slides, and point directly at them with a laser, or even her hands, so that people are drawn to the information on the slides. Needless to say, this information should be relevant.
