A cylindrical tank is required to contain a gage pressure 640 kPa . The tank is to be made of A516 grade 60 steel with a maximum allowable normal stress of 150 MPa . If the inner diameter of the tank is 2.6 m , what is the minimum thickness, t, of the wall?

Answer:

t = 5.55 mm

Step-by-step explanation:

given,

Gauge pressure (P)=640 kpa

Allowable normal stress =150 Mpa.

Inner diameter of tank =2.6 m.

Minimum thickness of wall. = ?

In case of closed cylinders there are two cases.

one is Circumferential stress and another one is longitudinal stress.

According to circumferential stress

\sigma =(pd)/(2t)

Where

p=pressure, d=diameter, t= thickness,

by substituting all values we get,

t=(pd)/(2\sigma )

t=(640* 10^3* 2.6)/(2* 150* 10^(6))

t = 5.55 mm

minimum thickness of the wall is equal to t = 5.55 mm
