The percent of decrease is 20 %

Solution:

Given that 870 people bought tickets for the school play

But but only 696 people actually attended

To find: percent decrease

Percent decrease is a measure of percent change, which is the extent to which something loses value

The figures are arrived at by comparing the initial (or before) and final (or after) quantities according to a specific formula.

The formula for percent decrease is given as:

\text {percentage decrease }=\frac{\text { final value - initial value }}{\text { initial value }} * 100

Here initial value = 870 and final value = 696

Substituting in above formula, we get

\begin{array}{l}{\text { percentage decrease }=(696-870)/(870) * 100} \\\\ {\text { percentage decrease }=(-174)/(870) * 100=-20 \%}\end{array}

Here negative sign indiactes decrease in percentage

Thus percent of decrease is 20 %
