Read the passage.

To Waken an Old Lady
by William Carlos Williams

Old age is
a flight of small
cheeping birds
skimming
bare trees
above a snow glaze.
Gaining and failing
they are buffeted
by a dark wind—
But what?
On harsh weedstalks
the flock has rested,
the snow
is covered with broken
seedhusks
and the wind tempered
by a shrill
piping of plenty.

What is the theme of this poem?

Elderly people should live life fully despite the difficulties of old age.

Elderly people should not go outside in snowy and windy weather.

For young people, life is full of challenges.

Young birds should not try to fly during strong winds.

Answer: Elderly people should live life fully despite the difficulties of old age.

Step-by-step explanation:

The most common theme in this poem by William Carlos Williams is referring to aspects of old age. This poem is wrote with poetic and simple language while he was using many literary devices and caring about form and structure.

  • The poet has represented old age and elder people trough symbolism of birds, trees, wind and more. His theme is focusing on that, that all people should live life fully and the difficulties in life should be always smaller than actual will for living. We can see the theme of the poem in the tittle too - ''To Waken an Old Lady''

Answer B and D are totally incorrect because they are translated and understood in a literary way although the poet is using many literary devices and symbolism.

Answer C is considering acceptance of poem's symbolism but it is not considering the main focus and theme of it which are the elder ones.
