It was recently reported that the Riversville city council is considering cutting its funding of the Riversville Library in order to save money for the next fiscal year. While I appreciate the city's need to tighten its finances, I am vehemently opposed to defunding the library as a means to that end. The library is an important part of our community. Hundreds of people visit it every month. I wholeheartedly endorse maintaining the library's funding and finding another way to bolster the city's budget.

Upon reviewing this paragraph, the author considers adding a sentence that defends the library's need for proper funding. Which of these sentences would BEST serve that purpose?
A) Without support from the city, the library would not be able to sustain itself for long.
B) Unlike other public facilities, the library is not appreciated by our politicians.
C) The library only lends out approximately five thousand books per year.
D) Our library has been inactive for more than thirty years.

Answer:

A) Without support from the city, the library would not be able to sustain itself for long.

Step-by-step explanation:

Option A is direct plea to the city council and also warns the city council of potential effects of cutting off the financial support to library. Also, as mentioned in the text library is important part of the community, it is city council’s responsibility to be concerned about the library.

Option B does not have any direct request for financial help and it is not city council’s responsibility to persuade politicians to appreciate the library.

Option C and D should never be added - they will only go in favor of city council’s decision of cutting off financial aid.
