Answer:

The total price of the CD, including tax, is 14.28 dollars.

Explanation:

First, we have to figure out what 20% of 17 dollars is. To do this, we multiply 17 times .20, which is 20% as a decimal. This comes to 3.4, which we subtract from 17 to take off 20% as the problems asks and we get $13.60.

To add the 5% sales tax to the CD we basically do the same thing as above but instead of subtracting, we are going to add. So we multiply 13.6 (the new price of the CD) times .05 and get 0.68 cents as the sales tax. We add this to 13.6 and get 14.28.

Therefore, $14.28 is the answer.

Answer:

$14.28

Explanation:

If the CD is $17 and is have a 20% off then you multiply .20 and 17 to get the amount that is off. Subtract that answer from 17 and you should get $13.60. That is the cost of the CD WITHOUT tax. To apply the tax, you multiply the cost and 0.05 (5%) to get 0.68. 0.68 is the tax cost. To get the entire cost of the CD, you add 0.68 (tax) and price (13.60) and get $14.28.
