Under feudalism, vassal owns the land and controls the land :
During the Feudalism period, such lands were called fiefs. The overlord used to grant rights to inherit to the vassal who held the land, in exchange of a feudal allegiance and service which was mostly like paying as a homage and fealty. There were vassals who resided at the lord's residence and some who owned lands directly under the crown. A vassal could also become a lord by acquiring enough lands and giving some to other knights.
