Why did most readers of the time dislike Walt Whitman's poem, Leaves of Grass?

It was written in unrhymed free verse, which was new.
It had almost no rhythm, so it was dull.
No one could figure out why he wrote with no imagery.

Leaves of Grass:

Leaves of grass is that poetry by American poet Walt Whitman which gained so much controversy during its time. The poem was written so badly and it was dull as it do not have any rythm.

No one could figure out that what the writer has written with no clear imagery. He was even fired from his job after his superior read the poem as it was found to be offensive.

The poet has presented explicit sexual imagery subject to derision by so many contemporary critics. So these were some of the reasons due to which this poem created so much controversy and wasn't liked by one of the readers.
