Answer: Approximately 11 pieces

Explanation:

The length of the string is 4 1/5 foot long and each is to be 3/8 foot long. Let us first convert the mixed number to improper fraction, 4 1/5 foot long becomes 21/5. Therefore

It means that we want to divide a 21/5 foot long string into equal pieces of 3/8 foot long

To determine how many pieces can be cut, we will divide the length of the string by the length of each piece. It becomes

21/5 ÷ 3/8 = 21/5 × 8/3

= 11.2

Approximately 11 pieces
