On the first day of​ June, there were about 17.71 h of daylight in a city. Five months​ later, there were about 5.3 h of daylight. What was the percent​ decrease?

To find percentage decrease of 2 quantities, we have to find the difference of the quantities and divide by the original quanity. Then we multiply by 100 to find the PERCENTAGE.

We will use formula:


(New-Old)/(Old)*100

Where

"New" is the latest quantity

"Old" is the first (previous) quantity

Here, New = 5.3 & Old = 17.71

We substitute into formula and find:


(New-Old)/(Old)*100\\=(5.3-17.71)/(17.71)*100\\=-0.700*100\\=-70

So we can say that the percentage decrease is 70%
