The equation to represent the proportional relationship between y, the total cost of the toys, and x, the number of toys is y = 12.99x

Solution:

Given, Mrs. Smith ordered 4 toys for her daughter’s birthday party.

The total cost of the toys not including delivery or tax was $51.96.

Each toy costs the same amount.

We have to write an equation to represent the proportional relationship between y, the total cost of the toys, and x, the number of toys

Now, we know that, total cost of toys = number of toys bought x cost of each toys

y = x
* cost of each toy

We know that x = 4 toys and their cost is y = 51.96

So substitute above values in the equation

51.96 = 4 x cost of each toy

cost of each toy = 12.99

Then, the equation is modified as y = 12.99x.

Hence, the equation is y = 12.99x
