How would you describe academic writing to a co-worker who is considering returning to school to eat their degree? How is academic writing similar or different to the writing you do in work or life (everything from emails, reports, social media, etc)? How are audiences similar or different in these contexts?

Thanks for your responses!

Academic writing can be argumentative or explanatory, just like how on twitter you argue or explain different subjects. It’s just more cited and both have their own advantages. Audiences, however, are very different on both sides. Anyone can just come across your tweet thread or instagram and like it, but in an academic writing, you get an actual critique sometimes and it’s very much formal and not so direct to the audience.
