Consider the equation:

4AI+3O2 2AI2O3

Is the equation balanced? Why or why not?

Oops I'm sorry, a year late haha. Anyway this is definitely unbalanced.

So if you write this out, you could write it as 4 A, 1 I, + 3O (x2) ---> 2 A, 1 I, 2O (x3).

so 4AI+6O---> 2AI6O

On the left there is 4AI whereas the right has 2AI. They aren't equal nor balanced.

I'm not completely sure but I hope this helps :)

If it is already balanced because the compounds aluminum(Al) and oxygen(O) have the same number of atoms
