If the sum of the numbers is 7, then the required numbers are 1 and 6

Solution:

Let there are two number one is smaller which we denote by ‘a’ and a larger number which we denote by ‘b’

According to the first statement of the question ,

smaller number is five less than larger number. Hence we get,

⇒ a = b - 5 ---- eqn 1

Also given that sum of numbers is 7

⇒ a + b = 7 ---- eqn 2

Plug in the value of "a" from eqn 1 into eqn 2

⇒ b - 5 + b = 7

⇒ 2b = 12

b = 6

Substituting "b = 6" in eqn 1 to get value of "a"

⇒ a = 6 - 5 = 1

Hence the required numbers are 1 and 6
