An extended metaphor is basically the same thing as a metaphor which compares two or more things without using the words "like" or "as."

The difference between a metaphor and an extended metaphor is that an extended metaphor continues on for several sentences. This is why it is called "extended" because it exceeds past a certain point. Extended metaphors can be a few sentences long or they can continue throughout an entire literary work.
