The nurse has reviewed proper body mechanics with a patient with a history of low back pain caused by a herniated lumbar disc. Which statement made by the patient indicates a need for further teaching? 1 "I should sleep on my side or back with my hips and knees bent." 2 "I should exercise at least 15 minutes every morning and evening." 3 "I should pick up items by leaning forward without bending my knees." 4 "I should try to keep one foot on a stool whenever I have to stand for a period of time."

Number three. You should always use your legs when lifting/squatting. You could injure your back if you bend over first without bending the knees

Answer: statement number 3 which states that ' I should pick up items by leaning forward without bending my knees".

Step-by-step explanation:

This disorder (herniated lumbar disc) occurs mainly at the lower back lumbar spine and it involves displacement of disc material beyond the intervertebral disc space. Lower back pain is the first symptoms experienced. Herniated lumbar disc disorder is mostly caused by poor posture and repeated flexion of the spine which includes bending forward in bad posture. Leaning forward without bending the knees leads to flexion of the spine which prevents the disc from moving back to its neutral position. I hope this helps. Thank you!
