27 = h + (h + 11)

27 = 2h + 11

H = Hanks Age

Bobs Age = Hanks age + 11

27 = 2h + 11

Subtract 11 from each side

16 = 2h

Divide each side by 2

8 = h

Hank is 8.

8 + 11 = 19

Bob is 19.

Answer:

Let B be Bobs age, and let H be Hanks age.

Bob is 11 years older than Hank so

B = H + 11

The sum of their ages is 27 so

B + H = 27

These are the 2 equations. Now solve them:

B + H = 27 so B = 27 - H

Put this into the first equation to get:

27 - H = H + 11

27 = 2H + 11

2H = 16

H = 8

Now put this back into the first equation:

B = H + 11

B = 8 + 11 = 19

So Bob is 19 and Hank is 8.
