ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS
Integers are simply whole numbers; numbers that are not fractions.
To add two integers, simply combine them. Example:
7 apples added to 8 apples results in 15 apples
7 + 8 = 15
To subtract two integers, take a number away from another number. Example:
If you had 15 apples but 7 were taken away, you would have 8 apples.
15 - 7 = 8
If you add a negative integer to a positive integer, it is essentially the same as subtraction. Example:
15 + -7 = 8
Remember:
- Two negative numbers make a positive number.
- A negative number and a positive number make a negative number.
- Two positive numbers make a positive number
