It began in 1929 and did not abate until the end of the 1930s. the stock market crash of October 1929 was the beginning of the great Great Depression. By 1933, unemployment was at 25 percent and more than 5,000 banks had gone out of business.

The Great Depression was a time after the roaring 20's, where there was mass debt and lack of money around the country. It affected everywhere, and people did not trust banks because their money had gone missing or had been used for other things. A lot of people would take loans from the government or money to be able to plant crops (especially people in the dust bowl) and then pay them back.
