C. Taxes from the British in exchange for protection.

After the French and Indian War, France gave up all of their land in the Americas and fled, but the war was very expensive and was being paid by the British. In order to pay for the debt, the British decided to tax the colonies in order to help pay for the expenses while still offering protection from outside forces. The colonists were upset with this as they still did not have representation in Parliament, "taxation without representation."
