The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in an atom. It can be found on the top left of an element on the periodic table.

For example: Lithium has an atomic number of 3, which means it has 3 protons in it.

Answer:

Identify the net charge.

Subtract the charge from the atomic number.

Add the charge to the atomic number for negative ions.

I hope this helps.
