A store manager checks each shipment of produce and removes any rotten pieces. In a shipment of 50 cabbages, the manager usually finds that 2 of them are rotten. About how many rotten cabbages would the manager expect in a shipment of 125 cabbages?

Answer:

5.

Explanation:

By proportion he would expect (2/50) * 125

= 125 / 5

= 5 cabbages.

The easiest way is to find the unit rate

50 cabbages = 2 rotten

1 cabbage = 2/50 rotten

Multiply this fraction by the number of cabbages:

2/50 x 125 = 5

The manager would expect 5 rotten cabbages.
