If it's within your input then it's a horizontal translation. For example,
y=(x-2)^2 is a quadratic equation that is shifted right 2. If it was "+2" it would be left 2, and because it's "-2", it's right 2. You would think that "+2" is shifted right but it's not. Keep in mind that it's the opposite.
