On Tuesday, a local hamburger shop sold a combined total of 240 hamburgers and cheeseburgers. The number of cheeseburgers sold was two times the number of hamburgers sold. How many hamburgers were sold on Tuesday?

Answer:

I found:

141 hamburgers and 423 cheeseburgers

Step-by-step explanation: Call

h and c the number of the two items. You get:

{ H + C = 564.

{ C = 3h

substitute the second into the first:

H + 3h = 564

4h = 564

H = 564/4 = 141 hamburgers

use this back into the second equation:

c = 3 • 141 = 423 cheeseburgers.

If the number of cheeseburgers sold was two times the number of hamburgers sold we know 1/3 of the burgers sold were hamburgers. So 240/3=80. This means 80 hamburgers were sold and 160 cheeseburgers were sold
