Jen and Ariel are reading a 400 page novel for their literature class. Jen decides to read 100 pages the first day and 50 pages thereafter. Ariel’s progress on reading the book is represented by the linear function y=40x+80, where is y is the total number of pages read after x days. Which statement BEST compares Jen’s reading rate each day to Ariel’s daily reading rate?

Answer:

Explanation:

Given that Jen and Ariel are reading a 400 page novel for their literature class.

Jen decides to read 100 pages the first day and 50 pages thereafter.

Hence if y represents no of pages and x no of days read, we have equation as

y=50x+100, x=0,1,2,3,4,5,6

Ariel’s progress on reading the book is represented by the linear function
y=40x+80, where is y is the total number of pages read after x days

REading rate per day = slope = coefficient of x

Hence we have rate is 50 for Jen and 40 for Ariel.

i.e. Jen reads 10 pages more daily than Ariel.
