First let's figure out, what is the number of children, by doing the following,

Number of children: k

Now we need to figure out the number of adults, and in the question it say that there are "3 fewer adults than children" meaning...

Number of adults: k-3

So for now what we figured out is,

Number of children: k

Number of adults: k-2

So when we look at this, we see two k's

So we are going to multiply, 2*k which is 2k. The only thing we have left is the -3. This is what we have so far.
