To put into perspective, the growing number of taxes occurred soon after the end of the French & Indian War, as well as the Coalition vs. Empire (i.e. Rise & Fall of Napoleon Bonaparte). These wars dug deep into the coffers of the British Empire, who saw a deficit in the amount of funding they had. As the citizens of Great Britain who were living in the U.K. already had a large burden of the taxes, the British government decided to transfer some of those burdens to the colonies abroad, including the American colonists. This is essentially why the American colonies were taxed.
