Jackson needs to be 1 3/4 inches taller in order to ride the roller coaster. Since he can’t wait, he puts on a pair of boots that add 1 1/6 inches to his height and slips an insole inside to add another 1/8 inch to his height. Will this make Jackson appear tall enough to ride the roller coaster?

Answer:

No

Explanation:

Jackson need total 13/4 inches taller or 3.25 inches.

height increase by pair of boots = 11/6 inches=1.833 inches

Height increase by insole = 1/8 inches=0.125 inches

So the total height increase by using boots and insole = 1.833 + 0.125

=1.958 inches

So we can say that 1.958 inches is less that 3.25 inches so Jackson can not ride because he could not get enough height to appear tall enough.

Answer: No, it won't make Jackson tall enough to ride the roller coaster.

Explanation:

We need to make the conversion from mixed number to improper fraction:

  • Multiply the whole number part by the denominator of the fraction.
  • The sum of this product and the numerator of the fraction, will be the numerator of the improper fraction.
  • The denominator does not change.

Then:

1(1)/(6)\ in=(((1*6)+1)/(6))\ in=(7)/(6)\ in

Jackson needs to be
1(3)/(4) inches taller to ride the rolles coaster.

The pair of boots add
(7)/(6) inches to his height and the insole adds
(1)/(8) inches to his height.

Then, we need to add these fractions in order to know if this will make him appear tall enough to ride the rooller coaster.

Since the denominator of these fractions are different, we must find the Least Common Denominator (LCD):

6=2*3\\\\8=2*2*2=2^3\\\\LCD=3*2^3=24

Finally, adding the fractions, we get:

(7)/(6)+(1)/(8)=((4)(7)+(3)(1))/(24)=(31)/(24)\ in

To convert this result to mixed numbers:

  • When we divide the numerator 31 by the denominator 24, we get a quotient of 1. This will be the whole number.
  • We also get a remainder of 7. This will be the numerator of the fraction.
  • The denominator doese not change.

Then:

(31)/(24)\ in=1(7)/(24)\ in

Therefore, since
1(7)/(24)\ in<1(3)/(4)\ in, the boots and the insole will not make Jackson appear tall enough to ride the roller coaster.
