Two private companies began the process of colonization of North America from 1606. After the British Crown was granted, the London Company monopolized the region to the north. It was up to the Plymouth Company the southern territories.

After failing to find gold and other exploitable products, settlers learned to grow tobacco. By replacing native Virginia tobacco with more-palatable plants from the West Indies, the company was able to raise a product that could compete with Spanish tobacco in the British market. After sent the first barrels to England in 1614, other colonists observed his lucrative results and imitated him. By the end of the decade, the colony had virtually a one-crop economy.
