Settlers in the colony affected with diseases like typhoid, malaria, and dysentery, along with famine which resulted in death and illness among them. They also faced the harsh climate with hostile Indians, which sometimes resulted in violent encounters. Also, because they were engaged in finding gold as they heard the Spanish did easily. English colonists were too focused on finding gold than giving much attention to growing crops.
