I used to have trouble with these too! So what you are going to need to do first, is replace the x in the equation with 5. After you do that, things are pretty straightforward from there. 5 to the second power is 25, and 25 minus 4 is 21. I hope I helped :)

I am guessing it is the problem where the 2 is an exponent? I had that one. 5x5 is 25, minus that by 4 and you get 21.
