Answer: 29 and 24

Explanation:

Since one number is 5 more than another

53-5 = 48

Then we divide that by two to get the value of one of the two numbers

48/2= 24

In order to get the number which is 5 more than the other, we add 5

24+5= 29

So the two numbers would be 29 and 24.

Check:

29+24= 53

Answer: 24 and 29

Explanation:

Let x represent one of the numbers, then the other number is x + 5.

"sum" means to add them, so lets add x and x + 5 and set it equal to 53

x + x + 5 = 53

2x + 5 = 53 simplified

2x = 48 subtracted 5 from both sides

x = 24 divided 2 from both sides

So one of the numbers is 24. The other number is x + 5

= 24 + 5

= 29
