In the South, agriculture was the most important economic activity. Plantation owners knew that slaves were necessary to grow crops and increase the production that was traded or exported, so they heavily supported slavery. The south did not have the kind of industry and fabrics that the northern states had. Unfortunately, some southern church leaders also supported it and invited people to own enslaves. This was questionable to many in the northern states because the church supposedly taught love, peace, and understanding.
