y² + 11y - 49 = 0 ← in standard form

with a = 1, b = 11 and c = - 49

Using the quadratic formula to solve for y

y = ( - 11 ±
√(11^2-4(1)(-49)) ) / 2

= ( - 11 ±
√(121+196) ) / 2

= ( - 11 ±
√(317) ) / 2

y =
(-11-√(317) )/(2) or y =
(-11+√(317) )/(2)

y = - 14.4 or y = 3.4
