Use the distance equation.

d² = (x₁−x₂)² + (y₁−y₂)²

The order doesn't matter. If I choose (x₁, y₁) to be (8, 4) and (x₂, y₂) to be (-7, -4), then:

d² = (8−(-7))² + (4−(-4))²

d² = 15² + 8²

d² = 289

d = 17
