The MA increases yet the work takes longer to complete the farther the applied effort goes relative to the load. An excessive increase in the MA may be counterproductive.

Bicycle derailleurs are the most obvious example of variable MA.

Choose a low gear to climb hills more easily, but if you don't switch to another one on the flat, you'll be pedaling frantically and quickly getting nowhere. (Of course, you progress, but slowly.)

I frequently use bicycles as illustrations of intricate mechanics. They aren't actually toys at all!
