When the width of a rectangle with a length of 3/5 foot was decreased by 1/3 foot, the area of the rectangle became 7/25. Find the original width of the rectangle.

Explanation:

Let

x-----> the length of the rectangle

y----> the original width of the rectangle

we know that


(7)/(25)=x(y-(1)/(3))

we have


x=(3)/(5)\ ft

substitute the value ox x and solve for y


(7)/(25)=(3)/(5)(y-(1)/(3))


(7)/(15)=(y-(1)/(3))


y=(7)/(15)+(1)/(3)=(12)/(15)\ ft

Simplify


y=(12)/(15)=(4)/(5)\ ft
