Alcoholism is an illness and a very, very chronic addition. Once they touch alcohol they simply have to more. It is not just a matter of being able to switch off. A drunkard can give it up if they choose but an alcoholic is always an alcoholic. They can get help from Alcoholics Anonymous and stop drinking but can never pick up another drink because if they do it starts all over again. They do not drink to escape because they cannot escape once they pick up that glass. It is the Drunkard that picks up the drink to escape not the alcoholic.
When people take cocaine over a longer period, they can experience the opposite effects during the cocaine high. They can experience a blunting of the emotions, sadness, and withdrawal from other people. This can be particularly frustrating for cocaine users who take cocaine to self-medicate to give themselves more confidence, to socialize, and to feel happier.
The power of opium's effects depends on how it is delivered into the body. It works fast when smoked, because the opiate chemicals pass into the lungs, where they are quickly absorbed by blood vessels and sent to the brain. Opium's effects occur more slowly when it is eaten or mixed in a liquid, because then the drug has to pass through the stomach and upper intestines, and into the liver before moving on to the brain. The process of digestion weakens the drug as it passes through the various organs before being absorbed by the bloodstream.

...... All of the listed addictions are serious. All of these could cause death, cancer, other dangerous diseases, etc.... Although many of these are used to make the person who is using them feel better(happier, more confident, etc...) they usually result in the opposite.
