Delaware was the first of the original thirteen colonies to ratify the Constitution and become a state on December 7, 1787. Rhode Island became the last of the original 13 colonies to become a state on May 29, 1790, three years later.

In 1791, Vermont became the 14th state and the first new state that was not a founding colony. When Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state on August 21, 1959, it was the final state to be added.

172 years after Delaware became the first state, Hawaii became a state.
