They are showing higher expectations because they are assuming that as their child gets older they will be able to handle more complex and difficult tasks and therefore as a result of their ability to handle these tasks they are going to give their children greater rewards like more freedom, a later curfew, going on trips with friends to places out of town, etc. By giving them more difficult tasks they are preparing their child for the real world which does not hand things to you, but instead makes you work for them.
