Explanation:

Let the length of the sides in the 2 squares be x and y. Then we have the following system of equations;

x^2 + y^2 = 157

4x + 4y = 68

From the second equation, dividing through by 4 we get:

x + y = 17

y = 17- x

Substitute for y in the first equation:-

x^2 + (17 - x)^2 = 157

x^2 + 289 - 34x + x^2 = 157

2x^2 - 34x + 132 = 0

x^2 - 17x + 66 = 0

(x - 11)(x - 6) = 9

x = 11, 6 .

y = 17 - 6 = 11, 17 - 11 = 6..
