The United States sent soldiers to Vietnam due to:

A. The North Vietnamese were fighting to unite Vietnam under a communist government.

At first, the United States was supporting their French alliance by helping them to retake control of their colony. After losing a battle to Vietnamese troops, the French left Vietnam and the United States chose to stay to combat the spread of communism from North Vietnam (supported by the Soviet Union and China) to South Vietnam (supported by the US).
