gale's grade in science for the term is determined by the average of five test grades. his first four grades are 80, 95, 78, and 90. in order to get a b for the term, gale needs to have an average of 84. what grade must gale get on the next test to get a b for the term? write an inequality and solve.

Mean as a measure of central tendency is the method used to calculate the average of numbers or objects.

Mean = sum of the numbers given/total numbers given

Given the average/mean to be 84,

The sum of the scores given will be;

80 + 95 + 78 + 90 + x where x is the grade needed by Gale for him to get a 'b' for the term to have an average of 84

Using the formula for finding average, we will add the numbers and divide it by 5 which is the total number in question. This gives;

84 = (80 + 95 + 78 + 90 + x)/5

Cross multiplying we have;

84×5 = 343+x

420 = 343+x

x = 420-343

x = 77

This means that gale must get a score of 77 on the next test in order to get a 'b' for the term.
