When a line is parallel to a side of a triangle and it intersects the other 2 sides then it divides the sides proportionally, that is


(x)/(x+5) =
(x-2)/(x+1) ( cross- multiply )

x(x + 1) = (x - 2)(x + 5) ← distribute both sides

x² + x = x² + 3x - 10 ( subtract x² from both sides )

x = 3x - 10 ( subtract 3x from both sides )

- 2x = - 10 ( divide both sides by - 2 )

x = 5
